Batch saves credit control time and telephone calls. I can then use this saved money and time to invest in buying other books, which obviously is good for the publishers.

Nibondh & Company Limited, Thailand

Visnu Kongsiri is Director of Nibondh & Company Limited in Thailand. Here he tells us about his business as bookseller and library supplier.

What does Nibondh & Company do? Our customers are the general public, academics, international school students, mostly Thais and the business is divided into 4 main categories, as follows:

  • Library supplier of academic books to universities in Thailand.
  • Subscription agents for academic and medical journals.
  • Exporter of original books and journals published in Thailand (in Thai and other languages) to various academic and government institutions throughout the world.
  • Branch store, Books @ 53, specialising in children’s and young adult books for supply to international schools both in Bangkok and the provinces.

Where is your business based? When we started business in the 1940s, the only people who could afford foreign books were government organisations. We are therefore located in the old part of Bangkok near government offices. Our branch store is located in a residential area, next to an international school.

How long has Nibondh & Company existed? It was established in 1945 by my mother in memory of my grandfather, Phraya Nibondh Pojanard who was killed in the Second World War.

How many people work for you? We have 30 full-time staff.

What kinds of books do you sell? In the two stores, we sell every kind, in Thai, English and Chinese!

How would you describe the current state of the book trade in Thailand? It’s booming, but since most of the population can only speak and read Thai, the boom is in Thai language books. Every bestseller is immediately translated into Thai (legally) and many rights agencies are located here. Japanese manga in translation is also popular. English learning and reading is being promoted because the ASEAN Economic Community is being established. Bangkok is the World Book Capital in 2013.

What do you most enjoy about being in the booktrade? Meeting old friends at the Frankfurt and London Book Fairs; satisfaction in obtaining books for clients that no one else can find; spreading Thai culture by exporting Thai books, and telling people that the sum of all human knowledge can be found in books.

Do you sell books online? We will have a new website in 2014 that will sell books online. We don’t sell e-books or e-readers.

How do you get your books from the UK? Do you use a freight consolidator? We use OHL International for both air and sea consolidation, as well as for US books.

What are you reading at the moment? Alistair Cooke’s America.

Batch and Your Business

How long have you been using Batch Payments? Many, many years now!

In what way does Batch help your business? First and foremost it saves me money. I can pay a number of publishers with just one cheque; my accounts with Batch clients are never overdue; I can call up missing invoices anytime.

Do you use Batch Returns? No. We have no need.

Is there anything we could do to improve our service to you? If Batch could accept payment by credit card this would be most useful.
